Farm Fun!

Sadly, for this post I have no pictures. I didn't want to look like the "city" girl taking pictures of her children on a farm for the very first time. As I am gradually switching over to natural and organic eating, one of the things I have been focusing on most is our meat. Some of the stuff that is out there is scary and I like the "back to basic" approach. A couple of months ago, I met a local farmer at the Farmer's Market who sold farm fresh eggs from grass fed chickens. There is a lot to be said for grass fed animals and even if the farm isn't certified organic, grass fed animals are the way to go! (for lots of reasons that I can explain to you at a later time if you want) Well, this weekend I was in need of some eggs so since the farmer's market is closed right now I decided to give our farmer friend a call. I let him know that we were bringing the kids too. We had a blast! Eli wasn't sure what to think at first. He kept asking, "what's that smell?" He broke the first two eggs we collected. He called the giant roosters, goosesters. But then he slowly began to warm up to Mr. Bost. He was very worried about where he walked in the pasture and said "this is really bumpy". We got to see the entire farm. Pigs, chickens, mules, donkeys, turkeys, sheep, peacocks, guineas. I am sure there are more that I am forgetting. We even got to collect the 2 dozen eggs we were buying straight from the hen house! They don't get much fresher than that, right!?!? It was just such a neat experience and really emphasized the whole reason we need to support our local farmers. I am excited too that we are exposing our kids to local farmers and our need and appreciation for them! Maybe next time we go, I will snap some pictures!

I would love to know the beginning steps you are taking to get your family switched over. I've always wanted to but I'm just not sure where to start!
