Warms my Heart!

I guess there is something with my children and a delay in speech. Who knows. When Eli wasn't talking on target, everyone told me, don't worry he might be one of those kids who just starts speaking in sentences one day. Sure enough, it was true. Then when Lucy wasn't talking, everyone kept saying don't worry, second children always talk later than their older siblings. I always thought, "GREAT! She'll never talk!" One of the very sad things is that Lucy doesn't say "mama". She says "dada" but only when you say, "Lucy, say Dada". She doesn't call us by our names, just whines. This plus a few little clues of her babbling and lack of words led me to take her to see an ENT specialist. We gave her a hearing test and she did okay on it. There wasn't a significant hearing loss but the doctor said that there was a little fluid on her ears but that she would most likely grow out of it. He asked us to come back for a follow up appointment to see if any of the fluid had gone away. We took her back to see him last week and there was still a "thick mucus" around her ears so the doctor suggested that we have tubes put in her ears. We scheduled the surgery for as soon as possible and we took her in this morning to have the surgery. She did awesome. It took like 5 minutes and in the waiting time before going in, she gave my dad and Aaron quite a giggle when they saw Lucy on the "happy juice". Because this was my first week back at school, I wasn't able to be with her during the day but came home early. It is amazing how quickly she has bounced back to herself. The more amazing thing is that even her babbling has changed in the way it sounds. We were sitting on the couch looking at some books and pointing to objects, telling her the words and asking her to repeat them. This is something that we do often to encourage her speech. It hasn't helped until today, her words have somewhat resembled the correct words. Then while we were sitting there going through the many words of things and names of people, she pointed to me, touched my leg and said "mama"! I just couldn't believe it. She has never called me "mama" before and it just absolutely melted my heart to hear her say that!
